Stacked discounts don’t add up: 20% off followed by an extra 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30% — the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. The “effective discount” figure shows the real combined saving.

About the Discount Calculator

The Discount Calculator shows the sale price and how much you save when an item is marked down by a percentage. It can also work out the percentage off from an original and a sale price, and handles an extra discount, sales tax and quantity, which is useful for checking whether a deal is as good as it looks and for pricing your own sales.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage.
  3. Add an extra discount, sales tax or quantity if needed, then read what you pay and how much you save.
  4. Switch to “Find % off” to work out the discount from an original and a sale price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the original price. For example, 25% off 80 is 20 off, so you pay 60.

Are two discounts of 20% the same as 40% off?

No. Discounts stack on the reduced price, so 20% then another 20% gives 36% off in total, not 40%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, a price of 60 after 25% off was originally 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
