Sales Tax & VAT Calculator
Add sales tax, VAT or GST to a price — or take it out of a price that already includes it.
Price including tax
Adding vs removing tax: to add tax, multiply the net price by (1 + rate). To take tax out of a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate) — not subtract the rate, which is a common mistake: 20% VAT on a £120 gross price is £20, not £24. Rates differ by country, state and product, so check the rate that applies to what you’re selling.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate). A price of 100 with 20% VAT becomes 120.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate). 120 including 20% VAT is 100 before tax, so the VAT is 20 — not 24.
What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?
VAT and GST are charged at each stage of production and sale, while sales tax is charged only on the final sale. For a shopper, all three are simply a percentage added to the price.
