Link Attribute Builder
Build an HTML link with the right rel attributes for paid, user-generated or untrusted links.
Google’s rules: mark paid and affiliate links rel="sponsored" and links in comments or forums rel="ugc"; you can combine values like rel="sponsored nofollow". Normal editorial links to sources you trust need no rel at all — they pass ranking signals, which is what you want for good references. Markdown can’t carry rel attributes, so use the HTML version on CMSs that support it.
About the Link Attribute Builder
The Link Attribute Builder creates HTML links with the right rel attributes for SEO — sponsored for paid and affiliate links, ugc for user-generated content, nofollow for links you don’t vouch for, and noopener and noreferrer for safety — plus target and title. It explains when to use each, so your links follow Google’s guidelines.
How to use the Link Attribute Builder
- Enter the link URL and anchor text.
- Choose what kind of link it is: editorial, paid or affiliate, user-generated or untrusted.
- Adjust the attributes and new-tab options.
- Copy the HTML link.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between nofollow, sponsored and ugc?
sponsored marks paid and affiliate links, ugc marks links in comments and forums, and nofollow is for any link you don’t want to endorse. Google treats them all as hints.
Should affiliate links be nofollow?
Google asks for rel="sponsored" on affiliate and paid links. Adding nofollow as well is fine for older crawlers.
What does noopener do?
It stops the page opened in a new tab from accessing your page through window.opener, which prevents a class of security attacks.
