Text to Speech

Paste any text and hear it read aloud, using the voices already built into your browser and operating system.

How it works: this tool uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers. The voices listed come from your own device and browser, so Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox each offer a different set — Edge and Chrome usually include natural-sounding online voices.

Can I download the audio as an MP3?

Browsers don’t expose the speech audio to web pages, so it can only be played, not saved. To capture it, use your operating system’s screen or audio recorder while it plays.

Why is the voice list empty?

Some browsers load voices a moment after the page. If the list stays empty, your browser may not support speech synthesis — try Chrome, Edge or Safari.

About the Text to Speech

Text to Speech reads any text aloud using the voices already built into your device and browser, so there is nothing to install and no audio is generated on a server. Listening is a great way to proofread your own writing, rest your eyes on long articles, practise pronunciation in another language or make content easier to take in for people who prefer listening.

How to use the Text to Speech

  1. Paste or type the text you want to hear.
  2. Pick a voice — the list shows the voices your device provides.
  3. Adjust the speed and pitch to suit you.
  4. Press play, and pause or stop at any time.
